Eden Project: Outdoor Biome

I first had the opportunity to visit the Eden Project several years ago with a work holiday.
This year I decided it was time to revisit on my own, and spent a good day touring the three
Biomes with my camera in hand. Well worthwhile!!!

Just outside the entrance hall is this splendid horse sculpure.

Through the ticket hall, and out into the ex-china clay pit, with all spreadout below

Firstly a wander through the "Wild Cornwall Zone"

This stone dome reminded me very much of the beehive stone hut

structures which were once home to Celtic monks on the Skellig Islands off Co. Kerry

and (perhaps) to some Cornish saint-hermits as well....

(I am unsure if this was the intended connection....the stone hut and space-age green houses below make an interesting contrast though!!!)

Its a huge bee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rain. Good for plants especially in the bog-garden

Just Popped in to see King Alfred....

Wantage, birthplace to King Alfred the " cakeburner" Great.

A nice place to spend some time on a grotty wet summer's day

when you'd rather not get soaked and blasted on the Ridgeway.

It has a splendid little "Downland and Vale" Museum. There I got

educated about Lord and Lady Wantage and what good Victorian eggs

they were. Maybe not as Great as, well......Alfred.......though.

It also has a splendid second-hand book shop where I bought lots of books

to educate myself about other subjects that fascinate...."as you do".

And on the literary theme......the area was also home to John Betjamin (Uffington, Wantage) Pam Ayres (Standford in the Vale), and the author of "Tom Brown's School Days" Thomas Hughes (also Uffington).

On my drive homewards I stopped by to have another look at the White Horse, from afar.

(Oh and by the way, speaking of things equestrine Lester Piggot....he was from Wantage!)
