Reaching for the moon

The moon..... a thing of wonder.....able even to
distract me from Bill Oddie, Kate Humble and Simon
King's thinking person's "Big Brother"
("Springwatch" has returned....hurrah!)
http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/tvradio/programmes/springwatch/prog_summary.shtml

Aided by a tripod, telescope and camera I reach
for the moon.....

....its one small click of the finger.....

one giant leap for imagining......

....beep.....beep.......beep.......

.....Tranquility Base here......the Eagle has landed!!

Popping in on the Hay festival

I've been following the route of the Wye Valley Walk
over the past year or so. My last stopping off point
was at Bredwardine. With a dry day
at last forecast yesterday I took a trip over
to Herefordshire to continue on the walk.
I thought it would be fun to arrive in Hay
whilst the Literary Festival
http://www.hayfestival.com/
was in progress.
The rain of previous weeks made the going
rather muddy....a challenge to the knees
when descending Merbach Hill after gaining
the following views from its top...

Another shot of Hay Bluff...

After slipping my way down off the hill and through
lots more lovely countryside I finally reached Hay..
with the first signs of the Festival in evidence!

The Castle grounds were particularly festive, I thought,
although perhaps walking past all those Bbq stalls was
illadvised self torture.....I had no money with me!

Having no money meant I could not linger with
a view to catching the bus back to Bredwardine,
so after the briefest of visits to Hay and its festival
I set off along quiet coutry lanes on way way back.
The yellow flowers in the roadside verges
caught my attention....

Each seemed to have a little green beetle
guarding it!!

Any way after a walking tour of 7 hours
with aching, out of practice, legs
I finally came in view of Bredwardine church
where the Rev. Francis Kilvert (Victorian diarist)
http://www3.shropshire-cc.gov.uk/kilvert.htm
spent the last years of his short life...and where I
I had left my car.

Highnam Wood Nightingales

Highnam Wood RSPB reserve just outside Gloucester
is a great spot for nightingales. I visit often.
This year, with all the relevant technology available
I wanted to "hunt" nightingales, and "capture" one in
close up.
Here are my results!

Dawn Chorus Day at Frampton

The "Dursley Birdwatching and Preservation Society" organised a dawn visit to Frampton this morning, as their event for International Dawn Chorus Day (which is actually tomorrow, but never mind that!).
So I went along.
Here my video of the said dawn chorus. You will appeciate that the sound is primary here. Enjoy.
It lasts ten minutes.
If you are short of time and skip to about the middle you will hear a particularly nice nightingale!

More First of May stuff

Here is another video clip I created to go on my
Morrismen blog. Originally it appeared on the
main posting for those images but somehow
it disappeared after I added the Stroud Ladies
Morris dance video. Maybe I can only put one
video on each posting?
Anyway, here's a song....abit out of date now
I know but a merry ditty nevertheless!!

May Day craziness (but who is crazy?)

May Day

Crack of dawn.
Am I cracked?
"Maybe I'm crazy...maybe WE'RE crazy....probably!"
(to quote a current song)

Anyhow. Up before the larks, some larking
about by the Gloucestershire Morris men
(and ladies, from Stroud) on Painswick Beacon

Like the good pagans we are (!) we greeted
the sunrising on the first of May oh!
For it is the first summers day, oh!
(Sadly the sun was having a lie in behind a thick
blanket of grey cloud-cum-fog!! Hey ho!)....

and sing to the old horse on the first of May (oh!)

All very English eh?

Musicians! Take a bow!

And now everyone. Thank you all! You made my day
(or made MAY DAY, whatever)

p.s. The sun finally begins to make an appearance,
here illuminating May Hill!

and here, Downham Hill as I head for home,
blogging, breakfast and a well earned siesta!
